🏡 Our History: From Crisis Response to Specialized Care
The Founding Vision
Home of Hope was founded in August 2005 by Eleanor Brook. Inspired by her faith, her experience adopting children, and her own time spent in a children’s home, Eleanor was driven to harness her passion to provide essential support for children in desperate need of care.
The organization initially served as an interim ‘place of safety’ for children facing unimaginable circumstances:
- Abandoned and left to die.
- Violently abused, raped, hungry, and neglected due to poverty.
- Infected with HIV/AIDS.
- Born bearing the effects of excessive drug and alcohol abuse by their mothers during pregnancy.
Discovering the Need: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
A critical shift occurred when staff noticed that many babies leaving the care of Home of Hope would return after only a few months. This pattern led the organization to research the underlying reasons, ultimately discovering Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
It was found that many of the children exhibited the complex characteristics of FASD. As Home of Hope looked deeper into the disorder, they discovered a severe lack of resources, support systems, and solutions in the country.
A Critical Challenge: South Africa has the highest reported prevalence rate of FASD in the world, ranging from 29 to 290 per 1,000 live births. Approximately 85% of children with FASD come from unstable families, placing them at greater risk of abuse or neglect, which often results in their placement within the care system.
Evolving Our Mission
Based on the significant challenges in caring for children affected by FASD, Home of Hope has strategically evolved. We transitioned from being solely a ‘place of safety’ to providing a multi-faceted, unique long-term solution for the protection and specialized care of these children and young adults.
Today, Home of Hope is uniquely positioned to address this immense need in our country by offering dedicated, specialized support.

Your recycling changes lives! See how The Sweethearts Foundation turns bottle tops and bread tags into wheelchairs for South Africans in need.
Turning “Trash” into Life-Changing Treasure
At The Sweethearts Foundation, we believe that no act of kindness is too small. What looks like a handful of plastic waste to some is a ticket to independence for others.
Through our Tops & Tags initiative, we transform discarded plastic into high-quality, customized wheelchairs. Every time you save a lid, you are helping us provide the Gift of Movement to someone in need.
How Your Contribution Creates Change
The journey from your kitchen to a new wheelchair follows three simple steps:
-
COLLECT: You save your plastic tops, bread tags, and tabs instead of binning them.
-
RECYCLE: We deliver the plastic to our recycling partners, who pay us for the raw material.
-
GIFT: 100% of the funds raised go directly toward purchasing wheelchairs for our vetted beneficiaries.
Impact Highlight: Since 2013, our community has handed over more than 600 wheelchairs! That is 600 lives forever changed because people like you decided to recycle.
The “Sweethearts” Shopping List: What to Save
We’ve expanded our collection to make a bigger impact. Please make sure everything is clean and dry!
-
Plastic Bottle Tops: Soda, water, milk, and juice bottles.
-
Bread Tags: Those little plastic clips from bread and rolls.
-
Coffee Cup Lids: The plastic lids from your takeaway coffee.
-
Can Tabs: Aluminum pull-rings from soda or sparkling water cans.
-
Household Lids: Caps from fabric softeners, detergents, and jars.
3 Ways You Can Start Today

Every Top Counts. Every Heart Matters.
Mobility is more than just moving from point A to point B—it’s about dignity, education, and opportunity. By saving your plastic, you aren’t just cleaning the planet; you are helping a child go to school or a parent return to work.

More Than a Shelter: The Lucky Lucy Story of Hope
Meta Description:
Discover how The Lucky Lucy Foundation rescues the “no-hope” cases and provides a pro-life sanctuary for South Africa’s most vulnerable animals.
A Voice for the Voiceless Since 2010
The Lucky Lucy Foundation was born from a miracle. In 2010, a pregnant dog (later named Lucy) was found tied to a railway line, having survived the unthinkable. Today, she is the ambassador for our mission: to provide a “stepping stone of hope” for severely neglected and abused animals.
As a Pro-Life and Pro-Quality of Life organization, we don’t just “house” animals. we restore their health, dignity, and spirit, focusing on the cases others might give up on.
The Three Pillars of Our Mission
Our work goes beyond the fences of our farm near Malmesbury. We believe in changing the future of animal welfare through:
-
- Rescue & Rehab: We specialize in “No Hope Left” cases, providing intensive medical care and emotional rehabilitation to prepare animals for their “furever” homes.
-
- Sterilization: Our primary goal is reducing overpopulation. We focus on mass sterilization programs in impoverished communities to stop the cycle of suffering.
-
- Education, Not Confiscation: We work within informal settlements to teach responsible pet ownership, providing food and support to families who love their pets but lack resources.
Impact Highlight: From our specialized “alCATraz” retirement sanctuary for senior cats to our outreach programs, we strive to ensure every animal experiences love, regardless of their age or health.
The Lucky Lucy Wishlist: How You Can Fill the Bowls
We rely 100% on public generosity. You can support our residents by donating these essential items:
-
- Dry & Wet Food: Quality food for both our canine and feline residents.
-
- Cleaning Supplies: Dishwashing liquid, pine gel, black bags, and laundry detergent to keep our sanctuary safe and hygienic.
-
- Medical Essentials: Tick and flea treatments (Nexgard, Bravecto, Frontline) and deworming tablets.
-
- Comfort Items: Pre-loved blankets, towels, and sturdy pet beds for the cold winter months.
-
- Farm Maintenance: Tools, garden furniture for our “cat gardens,” and building materials for enclosure repairs.
